Only a short walk from Tonsberg city centre you are able to find an oasis where nature flourishes. The wetlands on Ilene is especially important to birds during the spring and autumn migrations. Ilene nature reserve has a value of international importance, confirmed by it’s status as Ramsar site. Close to 300 birdspecies have been registered in the area.

Holmen wetland centre is situated by Ilene nature reserve. Holmen was one of around 30 cotter’s farms under Jarlsberg estate. Vestfold Country governor make use of Holmen to inform the general public and local schools about nature and conservation. During spring and autumn the Country governor arranges open days, geese safaries and manned bird towers.

The County Governor is the chief representative of King and Government in the county, and works for the implementation of Parliament and central government decisions. Vestfold County is located in Sothern Norway and has about 230 000 inhabitants.
